Crooks and Castles Jackets Begin with a Black Puffer
Crooks and Castles jackets on this store start with one coat, a black hooded puffer built for the coldest part of the year. Almost everything else from Crooks and Castles, the streetwear label behind the Medusa head and the chain graphics, is fleece or cotton jersey with a big chest print, so a quilted shell with nothing but a small tonal script on the chest is a change of pace, and it gives the hoodies and sets underneath a plain frame. The Crooks and Castles outerwear section above lists it now, and this page explains its build, how to size it over fleece and how to keep the nylon clean.
The First Coat in the Section
Only the puffer is in stock here today. More jackets may follow, and they will be listed here when they do. The puffer is unisex, so it also appears under Crooks and Castles women's clothing and on the men's page.
Other Outerwear the Label Has Made
Over the years the label has also put out varsity jackets, anoraks and windbreakers in its collections, but none of those are part of this store's stock.
Inside the Black Hooded Puffer
Nylon Shell Over Polyester Fill
The black hooded quilted puffer jacket pairs a smooth nylon shell with a polyester fill. Nylon blocks wind well and dries quickly, and a synthetic fill keeps much of its warmth even when it gets a little damp, which down struggles to do.
Wide Horizontal Quilting
Stitched channels run across the body from collar to hem. They keep the fill spread evenly so it does not slump toward the bottom, and the wide spacing gives the coat its full, rounded outline.
Branding Kept to the Chest
A small script logo in a shade close to black sits on the chest. From a few steps away the jacket reads as plain black.
Details That Seal Out the Cold
Hood, High Collar and Full Zip
The zip runs the full length of the front and up into the collar, and the hood rises from there to cover your head and neck when the wind picks up.
Elastic Cuffs and a Toggled Hem
Elastic at the cuffs stops cold air running up your arms. A cord through the hem with toggles at each end lets you cinch the bottom on a windy walk, or leave it loose when the jacket hangs open.
Two Low Zip Pockets
Two pockets sit low on the front panels and close with zips, so keys and a phone stay put when you sit down or bend over.
Sizing a Puffer Over Fleece
Measure with Your Layer On
The jacket comes in five sizes, from S up to XXL. Put on the hoodie or crewneck you expect to wear underneath, measure your chest over it, and compare that with the Crooks and Castles size guide. Measuring over a heavy fleece of around 480 GSM gives a truer number than measuring over a tee.
When the Larger Size Makes Sense
Fill needs room to stay lofted. If you are between two sizes, or plan to wear a full tracksuit underneath, go up one so the quilting is not pressed flat across your back and shoulders.
Layering Under a Black Puffer
Hoodies with the Hood Pulled Out
Wearing a hood under a hood is a common way to style this jacket. Any of the nine heavy fleece Crooks and Castles hoodies works, and a colored one such as the olive script hoodie frames your face against the black nylon.
A Full Set on the Coldest Days
For real cold, wear the jacket over a whole tracksuit so your legs stay warm too. The hoodie and jogger tracksuits page has four, from the all-black reflective logo set to the chain print set, whose joggers carry chain panels that stay visible below the hem of the coat.
A Quiet Coat Over Loud Prints
The plainer the shell, the more a bright print underneath stands out at the collar and hem. That is why the red Medusa sleeve hoodie, with prints on both sleeves, and the navy tie-dye pieces work so well with it.
Caring for a Quilted Nylon Jacket
Close every zip and wash the jacket alone on a gentle cold cycle with a mild detergent, or follow the care label if it says otherwise. Leave out fabric softener, which coats the fill and flattens it. Dry it flat or on a low tumble setting with a couple of clean tennis balls to break up clumps, and keep it away from radiators. The washing and care guide covers the fleece you will wear underneath.
